Poly B in Alberta
Everything this library knows about Alberta: the housing numbers, the code and permit reality, and what genuinely differs on this side of the provincial border.
The 30-second answer
Across the 10 Alberta cities we profile, roughly 297,422 of 1,146,765 occupied homes were built in periods overlapping the 1978 to 1998 Poly B installation window. That’s the pool where Poly B lives, not a count of homes that have it, and the only way to answer for a specific home is to look at the pipe.

Codes and permits in Alberta
The National Plumbing Code of Canada 2020 has been in force province-wide since April 1, 2023 under the Safety Codes Act, with no Alberta-specific technical variations. Alberta Municipal Affairs is also the source of the country’s best official Poly B guidance, including the estimate of roughly 148,000 Poly B homes in the province and the confirmation that codes are not retroactive.

Money: what Alberta offers
Alberta has the only government program in Canada that names plumbing repair as an eligible expense: the Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program (SHARP), offering income-tested grants up to $5,000 and low-interest loans up to $40,000 for homeowners 65 and over. The grants and funding page has the full national picture.
Buying and selling in Alberta
Alberta has no standard disclosure form; the seller’s duty centres on material latent defects, and the rules are explicit that a seller cannot instruct their licensee to conceal a known defect. The disclosure chapter covers it in full, and the buyer’s guide walks the purchase side.
The essentials, wherever you are
The material itself doesn’t care about borders: identification works the same everywhere, the failure chemistry is national, insurer behaviour is tracked nationally, and real replacement costs come from over 1,500 completed jobs. Start with the address checker for any Alberta address.

City figures aggregate to the provincial numbers above; both describe housing stock, never specific homes. Where Alberta specifics aren’t verified, this page says so rather than guessing.
