Why Poly B fails: the damage you cannot see

The unsettling thing about Poly B isn't that it fails. All pipe eventually fails. It's that Poly B degrades from the inside out, so a pipe can look perfect on the day it lets go.

The 30-second answer

Chlorine and chloramine in treated municipal water slowly attack Poly B's plastic from the inside, making it brittle over decades. The plastic fittings fail first, hot water lines age fastest, and because the damage is internal, a visual check can't tell you how much life is left.1

The chemistry, in plain language

Municipal water is disinfected with chlorine, and in some cities chloramine, which is harder on the pipe. Those disinfectants react with the polybutylene itself, breaking down the polymer chains that give the pipe its flexibility. Year after year the inner wall embrittles and develops micro-fractures, flaking from the inside while the outside looks untouched. Eventually the weakened wall lets go, as a pinhole leak that seeps behind drywall for weeks, or as a sudden rupture.1 Heat accelerates the reaction, which is why hot water lines consistently fail first.

The fittings fail before the pipe

The most notorious failure point isn't the pipe at all. Early systems joined Poly B with grey or white plastic acetal fittings, and those fittings, attacked by the same chemistry and concentrated by the strain of the crimped joint, have the worst failure record in the system.2 This is where the two eras of Poly B differ:

Stage 1 · Plastic acetal fittings

The higher-risk combination, more common in BC and in earlier installs. The fittings themselves embrittle and crack, and industry practice treats these systems as the priority for replacement.2

Stage 2 · Metal insert fittings

Copper or brass fittings with metal crimp rings, the norm in Alberta. Historically far fewer failures, which is why Alberta's record looks so much better than the US experience. Lower risk is still not no risk: the pipe between the fittings is the same aging plastic.3

What you can actually watch for

Because the degradation is internal, there is no reliable homeowner test for remaining life. What you can watch for are the early external signals:

Absence of these signs is not reassurance, and this is the part that surprises homeowners: "it has never leaked" describes the past, not the future. Insurers price the pipe on its age and record, not on your leak history, which is why coverage pressure arrives even in homes that have never had a drop of water damage. Repair or replace

When a section fails, a plumber can cut it out and splice in new pipe, and as an emergency stopgap that's exactly right. As a strategy it doesn't hold, because every other run in the house has aged on the same timeline, and insurers generally won't reinstate or improve coverage on the strength of partial fixes.2 The durable fix is a full repipe, and the replacement chapter lays out honestly what that costs and involves.

Common questions

How long does Poly B last?

There's no dependable number, and that's the honest answer. Canadian systems are now 28 to 48 years old, at or beyond the service life the industry expected, and because the degradation is internal and varies with water chemistry and temperature, two identical houses can have very different remaining life. The failure curve is why the pipe left the code and why insurers treat it as a scheduled risk.1

Can a plumber inspect my Poly B and tell me it's fine?

A plumber can assess the visible system: fitting type, exposed pipe condition, past repairs, and installation quality. That's genuinely useful for prioritizing. What no inspection can do is see inside the pipe wall, where the damage happens, so "looks good" is a snapshot, not a guarantee.

My city says our water is low in chlorine. Am I safe?

Gentler water chemistry slows the reaction; it doesn't stop the clock. Quebec's low-chlorine water and Alberta's metal fittings both produced better track records, and those systems are still aging past their design life. Slower is not safe, it's just slower.3
