Working with Poly B: fittings, repairs, and what not to do
Sometimes the repipe is booked for spring and the leak is happening now. Existing Poly B can be legally and safely repaired, but only with parts actually rated for polybutylene, and the products that qualify are a much shorter list than the plumbing aisle suggests.
The 30-second answer
Repairing existing Poly B is legal: plumbing codes are not retroactive, and Alberta’s safety guidance says previously acceptable products may remain in service.1 But new Poly B pipe hasn’t been made since 1998, so every repair is really a transition to PEX or copper, using fittings certified for polybutylene. Ordinary push-fit and PEX fittings are not, and using them on Poly B is how repairs become floods.2
Know your pipe first
Poly B is copper tube size (CTS), which is why transition fittings to PEX and copper work dimensionally: half-inch nominal pipe measures 5/8″ outside, three-quarter measures 7/8″, and one-inch measures 1-1/8″.2 The printing on the pipe tells you the rest: the PB2110 resin designation, the CSA B137.8 standard mark used in Canada, and a rating of 100 psi at 82°C. Most Canadian Poly B is light grey, though white, silver, black and blue variants exist, so trust the stamp over the colour.1 The 1995 National Plumbing Code also stipulated Poly B not be used on continuously circulating hot water lines, which is worth knowing if your system has a recirculation loop.1
Is it even legal to repair?
Yes. Poly B was removed from the National Plumbing Code in 2005 and cannot be used for new installations, but code changes are not retroactive. Alberta Municipal Affairs puts it plainly: previously acceptable plumbing products remain acceptable if they do not pose a health or safety hazard.1 Whether a major renovation triggers required replacement is a question for your local permitting authority, not something any code answers outright. The codes chapter covers the full history. The practical constraint is different: resin production ended in 1998, so there is no new Poly B to repair with. Every fix splices in an approved material.1
Why the original fittings are the weak point
The famous failures were less about the pipe than the grey plastic (acetal) insert fittings used in many systems, which chlorinated water embrittles until they crack, a process that also affects the pipe wall from the inside where it can look fine from the outside.3 Over-tightened crimps at installation added micro-cracks of their own.3 Canadian installs have one real advantage here: Alberta’s guidance notes that Poly B in this country primarily used copper or brass insert fittings with soft copper crimp rings rather than the plastic fittings and aluminum bands associated with higher failure rates in the US.1 If your system still has acetal fittings, replacing them with metal transition fittings is a sensible interim step, and a repipe is the permanent one.
The fittings that are actually rated for Poly B
- 1Push-to-connect conversion couplings. The mainstream push-fit brands certify their standard fittings for PEX, copper, CPVC and similar, but not polybutylene.2 What is rated for Poly B is the dedicated conversion coupling: a brass push fitting with one end engineered for PB (grey release collar) and the other for PEX or copper (tan collar), sold in 1/2″ and 3/4″ sizes. No glue, torch or crimping required, and rated for concealed spaces.4
- 2Crimp-style transition couplings. Brass couplings made to ASTM F1380, the polybutylene insert-fitting standard, with a PEX crimp end made to ASTM F1807, shipped with crimp rings. These are the traditional plumber’s way to splice PEX into a Poly B line.5 Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for ring placement and tooling on the Poly B side rather than assuming PEX habits carry over.
- 3Compression fittings. Compression lines marketed for grey Poly B exist and can join PB to PEX, CPVC or copper. Quality varies; have a plumber choose the specific product rather than buying on colour match.
If you do the push-fit repair yourself
The push-fit method is deliberately simple, and the manufacturer’s published steps matter more than speed: cut the pipe square, deburr it, mark the insertion depth, and push to the tube stop so the depth mark sits at the release collar. Half-inch fittings need roughly an inch of insertion, and the packaged instructions for the PB conversion coupling govern over any generic chart.2 Push fittings are designed as permanent connections, not something to pop on and off while you experiment.2
The don’t list
- ✕Don’t glue it. Polybutylene cannot be solvent-cemented the way PVC and ABS can; the chemistry doesn’t bite, and a glued joint is a failure waiting on pressure. Joining PB is mechanical only.6
- ✕Don’t use standard push-fit or PEX fittings on the PB side. Polybutylene is absent from their certified pipe lists. Only PB-rated conversion fittings carry the certification.2
- ✕Keep flame away. If a repair involves soldering copper, make the solder joints first and the push connection after; torch heat near plastic pipe or push fittings damages both.2
- ✕Keep plastic clear of the water heater. Common code practice keeps the first 18 inches from a water heater metallic. Poly B directly on a heater is also running at the hot end of its rating.
- ✕Don’t stress the system while you wait. Insurer engineering guidance for existing Poly B systems recommends keeping pressure below 60 psi and water temperature around 55 to 60°C to slow degradation until replacement.3
Common questions
Can a plumber just fix the leaking section instead of repiping?
Yes, and for an active leak that is the right immediate call. Just be clear about what it buys: the rest of the system is the same age and chemistry as the section that failed. Insurers generally treat a spot repair as a patch, not a fix, and the documentation that changes your insurance position is a full replacement certificate. Can I still buy Poly B pipe to extend a line?
No. Resin production stopped in 1998 and the material was removed from the plumbing code in 2005, so it cannot be used for new work. Extensions are done in PEX or copper with a certified transition fitting at the junction.
My renovation needs a plumbing permit. Will the inspector make me remove the Poly B?
Not automatically; codes are not retroactive and existing Poly B may remain. New work must be in approved materials, and whether a substantial renovation triggers wider replacement is your local authority’s call. Ask the permitting office before opening walls, and price the repipe while they’re open anyway, since access is most of the cost. The cost chapter shows why.
