PE-RT, PEX, CPVC or copper: every approved replacement compared

Poly B taught Canada an expensive lesson, and the standards system learned it. Every material allowed to replace it today has to prove, by test, the chlorine resistance Poly B never had. Here’s the whole field.

The 30-second answer

Four families of pipe can legally replace Poly B in Canadian homes: PE-RT, PEX, CPVC, and copper. PE-RT and PEX dominate modern repipes, and both must pass chlorinated-water testing with a minimum 50-year extrapolated life, a requirement that exists precisely because of the Poly B era.1 The publisher’s own crews install PE-RT as their primary material, with PEX when a client prefers it. Both are strong choices, and this page shows exactly how they differ.

The bar every modern plastic pipe must clear

Poly B’s killer was chlorinated hot water, and today’s standards attack that weakness head-on. Potable PEX and PE-RT must be tested against hot chlorinated water under ASTM F2023 and demonstrate a minimum 50-year extrapolated time to failure, and each product carries a chlorine classification code in its print string, from CL1 up to CL5, the highest rating, which certifies continuous hot recirculating service.1 When you read a pipe’s print string, that CL number is the direct, tested answer to the question Poly B failed.

PE-RT: the material the crews reach for first

PEX: three letters, three factories

All PEX sold for Canadian plumbing meets CSA B137.5 and the same dimensional and pressure minimums; the A, B and C designate manufacturing methods, not grades.5 PEX-A is crosslinked during extrusion, making it the most flexible, the only type whose kinks can be repaired with controlled heat, and the one that uses cold-expansion fittings; its flagship system carries a 25-year warranty that requires the manufacturer’s own pipe and fittings together.6 PEX-B (silane cured) and PEX-C (electron beam) are the crimp-and-clamp workhorses. One practical check that matters more than the letter: chlorine classifications vary by product line, so read the CL code on the pipe itself.1

Copper: the premium incumbent

Seamless copper tube under ASTM B88 comes in three wall thicknesses, K, L and M, and the copper industry documents service lives of 75 to 100 years, with installations from the 1920s still working.7 Its honest weaknesses are documented too: pitting and pinhole leaks in aggressive water chemistry, including microbially influenced corrosion that published case studies show perforating tube in as little as a few years in unlucky systems.7 Add commodity metal pricing and solder-joint labour and copper lands where the PEX vs copper page puts it: excellent, and usually reserved for exposed runs, heater connections, and owners who simply want metal.

CPVC: approved, but rare out west

CPVC under CSA B137.6 is rated to 82°C and remains a legitimate code option. Published failure-analysis literature documents aging-related embrittlement and solvent-cement sensitivities, and as a rigid material it tolerates freezing poorly, points its manufacturers contest in degree but which shape real-world practice.8 In our crews’ markets it’s seldom installed in residential repipes; if a quote proposes it, ask why it beats PE-RT or PEX for your specific home.

So which one?

For a Poly B replacement, the genuine answer is that PE-RT and PEX are both excellent, the decision rides on fitting ecosystems, warranties, and installer proficiency more than polymer chemistry, and the installer’s skill matters more than the letter on the pipe. What actually protects you is the same regardless of material: a CL-rated pipe, certified fittings installed to the manufacturer’s instructions, a permit and inspection (the permit centre has your city’s rules), and a completion certificate for your insurer.

Common questions

Is PE-RT as proven as PEX?

Its European service history runs about 35 years per the Plastics Pipe Institute, its chlorine testing requirements are identical to PEX’s, and the National Plumbing Code added it in 2020 on that evidence. Newer to the Canadian code, yes; unproven, no.

Could PE-RT or PEX turn out to be another Poly B?

The Poly B era is the reason that’s unlikely: chlorine resistance went from untested assumption to a coded, mandatory test with a 50-year floor. Poly B was never tested against the failure that killed it; its replacements are, before they can be sold.

My quote says crimp fittings. Does that work with both?

The metal-insert crimp standard now covers both SDR9 PEX and SDR9 PE-RT by name, so yes, with the manufacturer’s instructions governing details like ring placement. The one combination that never works is any of these fittings on the old Poly B itself, which needs its own rated transitions: the fittings guide covers that boundary.
