Do you need a permit to replace Poly B?

The 30-second answer
In every one of the 15 municipalities we’ve verified, a whole-home repipe requires a plumbing permit. The common exemptions, fixing a leak or swapping a fixture in place, never cover replacing the piping itself. Most cities offer a homeowner permit if you own, occupy, and do the work yourself; otherwise the licensed contractor pulls it. A reputable repipe contractor handles the permit and inspections as part of the job.
Alberta
Plumbing in Alberta is regulated under the Safety Codes Act. The National Plumbing Code of Canada 2020 has been in force province-wide since April 1, 2023, with no Alberta-specific technical variations. All seven Alberta cities profiled administer their own safety codes permits in-house.
British Columbia
Plumbing in BC follows the BC Building Code 2024, Book II (Plumbing Systems), administered through each municipality's own building and plumbing bylaws. Vancouver is the exception: it operates under its own Vancouver Building By-law, with the 2025 edition in force since September 2025.
Why the permit matters for Poly B specifically

Insurers asking about a completed replacement want to see that the work was permitted, inspected, and documented, alongside the contractor’s completion certificate. An unpermitted repipe can undercut exactly the proof you paid for.
